I have fond memories of Twizzlers…pulling them apart while sitting on a blanket in the grass as a child. Good times, yummy candy.
Twizzlers are a delicious sweet treat that has been around for almost 100 years! But are they gluten free? We shall see…
So are Twizzlers Gluten Free?
Sadly, Twizzlers are not gluten free.
Their main ingredients include corn syrup, wheat flour, sugar, and cornstarch. Since gluten is a protein found in wheat and other grains, unfortunately Twizzlers are a no-go.
Is Licorice Gluten Free?
Okay, well you may be thinking, “If I can’t have Twizzlers, is there any licorice that I CAN have?”
Regrettably, most popular licorice brands, like Red Vines, do contain gluten in both the black and red licorice varieties.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t have licorice ever again. Now that you know what you can’t eat, let’s take a look at what you CAN have! That’s always better, right?
Check out these alluring alternatives.
Gluten Free Twizzlers Substitutes
There are several yummy Twizzlers and licorice alternatives to choose from. Here are two of the most popular options. Both can be found at Sprouts and other grocery stores as well as online.
- Smart Sweets Red Twists (GF and only 2 grams of sugar)
- YumEarth Organic Licorice (comes in strawberry, pomegranate, and black licorice)
If you are feeling even more adventurous, you could try making gluten free licorice at home.
Here is a really cool recipe from Freebie Finding Mom! Let me know if you try it! I am very curious.
